About Me

I can’t say I was born an artist…as a young teenage boy driving down some dirt road in West Texas in route to the river…I realized…I really wanted to be one of…”Those People”… live a life that allowed me some level of freedom and expression…that the life I’d grown up in…didn’t…

I knew early in my life I was going to make jewelry…that was the beginning of the fatalistic struggle…I have been a jeweler for close to 30 years….Painting was something I was always intrigued with…there was an emotional response that certain paintings drew from me…especially the Abstract Expressionist work…yet the thought of actually painting was intimidating and daunting…

I returned to school at 45 years old…received a BFA in Fine Art…emphasis in Painting….that was by far the best thing I’ve done in my life…it gave me the tool box…the introductions and the key to every door I wanted to open….

My paintings are fundamentally a series of events…they are designed to elecit a response from the viewer rather than a “What’s it all mean” sort of conversation….my paintings are about the process of painting and are often confused or mislabeled as “Abstraction”…I don’t use imagery as a point of departure…..and really strive for an aesthetic rather than anything discernible…..or making sense…

I love to write……explore the beautiful Southwestern landscape……to me there is a level of purity in producing art…something that can only be generated by one’s soul….a passion that is dangerous…..as it is intoxicating…as it is rewarding….as it is necessary for those of us who make producing art a part of our lives….

  2. Robert,
Have been looking for you for quite awhile. Finally saw you on classmates. com and followed you here. Nice work!! I have just started looking through your pictures and writings and I must say I am quite impressed. You always had talent and it definitely shows in your work. After 19 years with OIC we were bought out by Dillards so I had to come home in 2005 and find a real job. I worked for a couple of companies before landing here at a construction company two and a half years ago. I do all there estimating and manage several jobs while the boss does what he wants. Good guy, generous, however with construction on the Treasure Coast in a bit of a recession it still sucks to know you made more money five years ago. Anyhow since I don’t know how public this is, I will stop here. Since we both suck at phone conversations (based on history) send me an e-mail so we can get back in touch. Your friend for 46 years, Diaz.
