“What Hands Say ” 2009

Judah and I painted all afternoon…it was wonderful…watching his bright mind translate what he thought….onto a 4 foot by 5 foot canvas….we discussed chaos…and complexity…number of events on his canvas….what we both looked for as “Interesting”….after our conversation…he realized that in order to get what he wanted on the canvas….it required he get out of his box..take some risks…not be attached to what may present itself in front of him…that he did…and he did it well…

All styles and types of painting…are nothing more than well developed recipes…we each have what works for us…and over a few years have honed the recipe so we no longer need to…look at it to complete the project…what we have developed is difficult to transfer to another as the translation gets rewired….and is interpreted differently…producing something less similar…than ours…and more with anothers personal signature….the painters I really admire….much as love their work… I have no desire to reproduce from my mind….

it is what happens with our hands…how we manipulate objects or…maybe dig in the earth…control a pencil…or a delicate instrument…those are what make us so unique…and different…our hands are the devices that represent the best we can do….granted our brain drives that  level of articulation…I love to look at peoples hands…ask them which of their 2 index fingers is their favorite…or which thumb do they like better…and why…even though they appear close to identical…they are more dissimilar than similar….that in itself says a great deal about our…hands…about us…

  1. I have been fascinated by human hands since I can remember. I think they are the most important physical part of us. Wonderful images match this thought-provoking text.
