Surface of a Piece of Pipe….2009

Could have been the dead fly on the window sill….or perhaps it was the fact I knew one of the cats had been on the dining table…but either way…my suspicions were accurate…there were significant changes brewing…not like a rotting garbage brewing…more…like an artesian  well ready to burst…push through the earth…into a puddle…then a larger puddle…something some may confuse as a pond…maybe later…it wasn’t any longer about anything that really had a serious identity…those days were long gone…and the idea of wearing the costume….just to make them happy…well….I’d sold for a few extra dollars there in a small building by the Indian reservation…where nobody knew….they were safe…so was I…that’s what mattered…and today when we bought the roll up kind of cigarettes and talked that old oil field talk….we could feel pretty good about knowing nothing was still nothing…unless we wanted it changed…and it didn’t seem anybody was going to step up….and offer…much for nothing…so we kept it all in the paper bag…right there along with “The Wine of the Century”…thought of every woman we knew named Shirley…I could only come up with one….she was an albino….lived in a smaller town outside of Clovis….I’d just heard of her…so she may not have been real…but her name was Shirley…Shirley…the cafe girl…served that cold pie…with the even colder milk….she always told me…”Things are never what they seem”….I knew that…in a boyscout kind of way…but never really clear as it came from a Pie Girl…maybe she knew more….and I knew less….or we knew the same…but those days of dust and brown dried boxes…blowing down the alley…became one of those still photos…no one knows anything about….just there in the box…waiting for another story to come along….maybe move it to Bakersfield….or closer than that….I’d never know….

  1. Oh my, is this an excerpt from a novel? I’m going to say it is. How marvelous to come here and find this, all perfect, just as it is.
