“New Art Movement” Storage Containers” 2009

so it’s 2009…and the last significant “Art Movement” was …Pop Art or maybe Minimalism…oh….say close to 40+ years ago…artists have not stopped producing art…skeptics continually say that “There is nothing new in modern art….everything that is being produced has already been done”…so are we at an impasse…the immobile meeting the irresistable….

my question is…once the dust settles from the debate of…firstly is it possible to create a new art movement…and secondly if it is possible to create a new art movement…what will it look like…in 1869….the head of the US Patent office….suggested that the office be closed indefinitely ….because he was certain…everything that was every going to be invented….had been invented…and could see nothing new being introduced….are we at standing at that edge…thinking that everything that has ever been painted….has been…everything that has been sculpted…has been….in retrospect…the statement that everything that is going to be invented has been invented…sounds absurd….sounds so narrow-minded….

I believe the trouble with defining a “New Art Movement” comes from the inability to define “Contemporary Art”….we can say that “Contemporary Art”….is more modern than modern…abstract….non-objective…contemporary only if the artist are alive…..and a myriad of other failing statements….the inability to define “Contemporary Art” comes from a mixture of Academic freedom to define art…as well as the gallery industry’s ability to take a sow’s ear and turn it into a silk purse…

producing art has become  an increasingly “Dumbed Down” profession… rather the expertise has emerged in the marketing and management abilities of the galleries as well as the Kid’ Glove” mentality and “Politically Correct” attitudes of the university system…..anyone can produce art…. professional training is not required….creativity is not necessary…education certainly is not essential….understanding concepts…historical cannons….art history really just clutters the emerging artists mind and has no place…..producing art has become an entitlement mentality…one that merely requires you call yourself an artist…an miraculously….you are…..people often retire…and become professional artists…..

Who says what is and what is not Art?…..that is the question that has to be defined before another step can be taken….The Abstract Expressionist WERE NOT considered Fine Artists by the art community…and were initially ridiculed by the spread in “Life” magazine…not until Guggenheim discovered them…. marketed them…and exposed them did they become recognized as fine artists…without her…you’d have never heard of Jackson Pollack, or Robert Motherwell…it was the brilliance in marketing that made these artists…not their work….their work evolved around the hype and the movement began to emerge….

I think an art movement requires…. a collective of intellegent…dedicated….talented….skilled…knowledgable….artists that don’t care about anything but the work…and the philosophy behind the work…a committment that far transcends…art production….and now creates a diologue…about the “Why’s” of the work…a bond that is a symbiotic relationship of sorts…between creative people of like minds….artists become activists about their work…live their philosophy….live their work completely….in its entirerty…..I think an art movement happens when these artists….gain power… become recognized…and continually develop themselves around what brought them collectively to that particular point where it made sense….where the dialogue and philosophy now has become a creedo….solidified….unified….yet individually expressed….

I can’t say what the “New Art Movement” will look like….I can say…..I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens…….I don’t really care if it explodes or implodes…..

  1. The comment about the US Patent Office closing makes me smile. I think being in human form means we automatically inherit the gift of shortsightedness. I can think of so many things that I thought were ended for all eternity actually turned out to just have a dormant period to them. Maybe artists are a contemporary armada, moving into a whole new way to express. We’ll be watching for the new look, too 🙂
