“Up or Down” 2009

“Change is the constant, the signal for rebirth, the egg of the phoenix” – Christina Baldwin

we watched it change…right before our eyes….the sow’s ear….morphed….twisted..turned…and finally there in front of us was a  beautiful silk purse…….still smelled of pig….though….something that no matter what the origin…had to stay defined…had to always be what it always was…sort of like gloves….never gonna be socks….even though they look similar….bees don’t care of the color…of the flower…just the nectar….it’s all in the books…all the little black words..typed small on the white linen pages….so one day you need glasses just to see the title….rather than the words….or maybe she reads the stories to you….while you recount all of those days before this time….when a walk meant more than a few steps…and mornings were those glorious dives into a new clear lake pond…where the mirror reflected the only world above you…that one that was different from the one today….where you used words like…”Hope”…Wish”….”Dream”…where as now…you can’t even spell those words….anymore….and maybe it was the raw deal…or the way you rolled the dice….or maybe you just put on that suit of clothes and forgot to…take them off….and never thought the dead could really dance…but you can and you do….to those old songs….the ones when you had hair…and love in your life….and each day wasn’t a scramble to find a new shaped puzzle piece to replace the lost one…and sun shine…or gray clouds your finger snap can change it all….like  a gene in a bottle….or the day you got that letter from them…the one that said it was fine….and doors were open….and you took your leaflets….out that day the wind blew…hard and threw them skyward…they hovered…wanting to be….close…because they knew you…you were the comfort….you offered the safety…..but not today….the last paper blew hard west….you thought for a few moments of those swimming pool days…as a kid…when the water was cool enough to make you shiver…that’s when fear was not your friend……

the attempts were grandious….I mean if you wanted it to be Haight Ashbury ….badly enough……who knows with a concentrated effort it just may become…that…here in the middle of nowhere….where people still add a  “G” to sandwich….and the famous corner’s closets relative….has a  Spanish sounding name…seems peace and love sort of faded into the boomers….became apart of their BMW and Hummer mentality…while the young idealist want to bes….profess all of the simplistic attributes…just as long as I a can still have my socialist roots…a laptop….some coffee from Guatamala…as long as it’s “Free Trade”….smoke Nate Shermans….or something Organic…at least…and fool everybody into believing…I’m a revolutionary….a subversive….a militant against the war…against the government…against the establishment….and I promise to shop locally…never be seen in Starbucks….wear as much sweat shop free clothing as possible….boycott Walmart and Target…unless of course they have…a good sale paper this Sunday….but I’m still a revolutionary….I was just born 50 years to late……I don’t want to be mom and dad…I just want to be from the same time as mom and dad….. I’m a revolutionary you know…a modern day….weatherman….I listen to Bob Dylan….I read poetry….have I protested the war?…no I had to work that day….but call me the next time…ok…..

I crumpled all of the paper…not just your letters…but all of it….took all of those journals…decided they were the reason… I was burning on those days the heat was to hot to measure…wrote you and you and you and you…told you what was and wasn’t…the rusted chains fell from me….the flames stopped..and from my ashes….I walked away…..my new wings still wet ….yet ready to open……and I left all of it…behind…for good…..

  1. LOL! 40 years ago there was a house on the one way (Coal) the hippies who lived there called ‘dog city’. I think you can still see the orange sun burst on the tin siding as you drive by.
