“If you’re losing your soul and you know it, then you’ve still got a soul left to lose” – Charles Bukowski

The book…”The Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell has been on my mind again…it is one of those books that gets to the blood and guts of what a person needs to face before realizing the successes in their lives….Gladwell says success occurs after 10,000 hours of attempt….or roughly 10 years….and it occurs by a well laid out plan that requires other people….fundementally the formula for success based on “Outliers” is:

Ability + Opportunity + Culture + Effort + Luck = Success.

seems that all of these are within our control with the exception of Culture and Luck….culture is not necessarily defined as one’s cultural background…it may be the current culture they create….those they align themselves with…the groups they choose…the people they associate with etc…luck…well some believe it exists…others don’t see it as a real  part of life…perhaps more fate…if it does exist to you…then Luck is crucial…and has to be translated as something like this….”The force that seems to operate for good or ill in a person’s life, as in shaping circumstances, events, or opportunities” and certainly if you believe in luck …then the force is a nebulous….entitty…that randomly affects you …and will be a crucial part in your success….if you don’t believe in luck…then the equation becomes:

Ability + Opportunity + Culture + Effort = Success.

all of these are within my ability to alter….again culture now becomes my current associations…..knowing that I’m no longer relying on planetary alignment…..the bones the soothsayer has thrown….or the advice from the oracle….at Chimayo….I have to then evaluate if I have what it takes to adjust and change each of these over my 10,000 hour training period….here are the dictionary definition…

Ability- Competence in an activity or occupation because of one’s skill, training, or other qualifications

Opportunity- an appropriate or favorable time or occasion

Culture- the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group

Effort- an earnest or strenuous attempt

and we do have control over each of them…it is up to us entirely about what we do with these….Ability…..perhaps we need more education….or maybe we just need to do what we want to do everyday.,…to become more competant…and if that’s not the issue….maybe it’s time management ….Opportunity….often times opportunity arises everyday….we just have to recognize it as opportunity….and not call it something else…it requires getting out there….Culture….this is all about alignment…who we align ourselves with tells everybody who we are….if we choose less than credible people…we then become less than credible….in the eyes of everyone that sees us…if we choose…to align ourselves with above board…credible peole…we reap that benefit as well….Effort…..requires…repitition….the more we do something the better we become at it….and most likely it will take years to see results that are different from day one…..effort requires….we make the plan to….get greater Ability….recognize Opportunity….Investigate and Develop our Culture…and continue practicing what we want to be…..

I am not an authority by a long stretch….yet I have done the same thing, (jewelry) for well over 30,000 hours and know what it means…feels like and looks like…people should find what they love doing…and do it….I love art…and producing art…I have taken a ceramics course…a printing course…and a few others that were required to get a BFA…and I have no want to ever make another piece of pottery or etching as long as I live….I believe we migrate to what we are…and once we find that we have to hone it and strive to become an expert at it… the flip side though is sometimes having to know when to throw in the towel…maybe what we think we are is not at all what we are…and the elusive nature of the pursuit becomes the task and not the achievement of the goal….I know a writer…who for many years professed he wanted to publish books…wrote feverishly…everyday…wrote numerous books…tha ened up in boxes….yet never took the steps to publish…after many years of this cycle….he finally told me his writing was for himself and he had come to realize that publishing was never really part of the diologue…it was what he thought people who wrote were suppossed to do….what was expected….

We are all given gifts that we are exceptional at doing….some of them require we work at them constantly because they clarify our reflection of who and what we are…..to let those gifts go is an enormous loss…yet to believe they define us when they do not….and we are substituting something for the real reflection of ourselves…..is equally a great loss…

my task is and has been to find what makes me the best I can be….when all of the elements in my life are aligned….the results are aligned….as well…when those results are predictable and certain…I then know I am on the right track….plus or minus……10,000 hours….

  1. I made a blog post about the necessity of practice–that the practice of practice itself is possibly more important than the end result. I was thinking a lot about Gladwell’s concept of “10,000 hours,” as well as the traditional Chinese and Japanese concepts of painting 10,000 petals or throwing 10,000 pots before you even begin to consider them pottery or petals.

If we combine effort and ability, we have a good formula for success. But true effort. Not talked-about or dreamed-about effort. But serious, applied, repeated effort… we have an equation that can produce both opportunity and success.

  2. is it really an equation > or something you just have to do because you love it… and to not do it would be suicide…

I think “success” lies in being happy…. but hey.. what do I know.

    • I didn’t mean for that to sound snarky…

I think that it is a true gift when you find something you really love to do.. and I think that you not only found the things you are good at… but things that seem to make you happy as well.

  3. It is not a snarky comment at all….there is an equation….and there is also a separation of doing something because you love it….for the sake of loving it and doing something for the sake of living it and wanting to become a success at it professionally…Imagine a musician that loves to play the piano….and only plays for the sake of playing…while another musician loves it equally as much yet strives to be a concert pianist and wants more from it than just to play…perhaps they want the mastery of the instrument….there in is where the equation becomes necessary….because without the equation there is no plan….to pursue playing for the sake of playing any further….
