I am intrigued by the idea that a great deal of  the “Asian aesthetic” ….is very significant in the west….a myriad of tattoo styles from Japan and China…adorns bodies all over people all over the United States….I’ve seen woman wearing Japanese style clothing…altered to fit the American landscape….Feng Shui….specialists in the phone book…who’s last names are Smith…Debernardo and Taylor….Doctors of Oriental Medicine who graduated from a Chinese medicine school in Texas….Asian furniture and interior design specialist…..who have never been to Asia to study furniture nor design….I am guilty of this as well…I am drawn to the Asian aesthetic….and often purchase something because of its beauty…rather than its significance and how it fits into the entire scheme of my world…..or even question if it fits…..I have kanji tattooed on me and rather than taking someone’s word for it I had it professionally translated…just to make certain the kanji didn’t really say “Bento box special” …….

while traveling through Malaysia some 20 years ago….I passed through an outdoor covered fish market…..most everything was alive…in water or in cages….a sensory experience I’ll never forget….the people were very friendly and wanting to show me what they had for sale….I’ve always loved fish markets….there is something about the variety and color and energy that has always been such a great experience…near the back of the market was an enormous man….without a shirt…his chest was covered with beautiful black design tattoos…he was wearing shorts and high rubber boots….when he turned around…across his shoulders in large black block letters was tattooed…”BE PATIENT“…….his version from his cultural perspective and my version from my cultural perspective of what “Patience” is all about could not have been further apart…like looking at a beautifully done piece of kanji tattooed on someone…we as westerners see the design…the flow of the symbol….and generally pay less attention to the deeper meaning of the symbol….this Malaysian man perhaps saw it the same way…but enough so to have it permanently affixed to his body….

two weekends ago….I was at a hotel where the owner must have…1. gotten a great deal on Foo Lions…or 2….is is completely enamored with them to a point of collecting them…..there were at least a dozen Female Foo Lions in the courtyard of the Hotel….and 1 male…and something at the hotel felt terribly wrong…..all of the time….

Foo Dogs are actually Foo Lions…..they are always in pairs…male on the right…female on the left as you are facing the building (feng shui)…..the male’s right paw is always resting on a ball (The Flower of Life) …..the Female is identical with the exception of holding down a pup with her left paw that represents the “Cycle of Life”…..the female protects those dwelling inside the space she watches over….while the male guards the dwelling….the lions are placed at the entrance to a building…home….hotel…etc….sometimes the male’s mouth is open….while the female’s mouth is closed….this is symbolic for the enunciation of the word….”Om”…..The Buddhist version of the lion….is the protector of “Dharma“…without a 10 page disertation….fundementally any virtuous path….

I am by no means an authority on Asian Aestheic”….do’s and dont’s…..but I do put a great deal of merit into the reason why many things are the way they are with the Asian aesthetic…if a female Foo Lion protects those who inhabit the dwelling and the Male Foo Lion  protects the dwelling and have for a few thousand years…then as far as I’m concerned…they will for a few thousand more…..the beauty is one thing….the truth behind the beauty is a completely different read….and for me…I want to make certain anything that I put in my world…..really wants to be there…….

  1. …interesting about the Foo Lions…

I can only speculate that the overpowering of too many female lions and only the one male could have changed the energy of the place…

Just proves you have to be very cogniscent of the meanings of items and their intention when you bring them into your space.

  2. Elaine, the energy was over powering and very undirected….almost like there were far to many people trying to take care of me…I’m writing the owner this weekend and letting him know how to set the lions up and where…hopefully that will change some stuff….and you are so right about being aware of what meanings an item has….
