250. March 7th…I want to be a cowboy…or a veterinarian…maybe an astronaut…or a head hunter…yes…that’s it a head hunter in the South Pacific…I wanted to be one of those since I was 3 months old….

“The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you.” – David Foster Wallace

I’ve always admired these people who have a plan from a couple of days after they are born…you know they want to be a “Paleontologist”…when they are 3….and you see them  20 years later…ask them what they’ve been up to and they say…”I’ve been a Paleontologist for the past 5 years“….we have that shocked sort…predictable look when this happens…I just find the specific nature of someone’s desired profession at a young age….is at the very least… miraculous… I wanted to be a pine tree or a heliocoptor…so there was no real big reach here…there was never a possibility that either would happen…I’m sure my parents thought…”oh…isn’t it cute…Bobby wants to be tree“…while all of the neighbor kids are getting groomed to be doctors and lawyers and such…my choices…became…Ponderosa or Pinyon…..kind of like a life sentence with no possibility of parole….but it all worked out….then there are the people who have decided at some ridiculously early age they want to be…Family Lawyer…specifically working in divorce….again…20 years later …you see them dancing in some topless club…by the military base…and rather than ask how’s the law business….you just presume they got a late start and this is how they’re paying the bills while going to law school….

I had a student who…she and her father had her path all worked out…she was 9….wanted to be able to speak  3 or 4 languages by the time she was 14…yet spoke only English….wanted to be a math wizard…a black belt….a scientist…(you know those kids)…wanted to attend a private high school…and then on to Harvard where she was going to get a business degree…then an MBA in International Relations….and because of her linguistic ability move to Asia and work as a liason between the Chinese government and the US government…make boxes of money…her father encouraged her….to a point she was already graduating Summa Cum Laude from Harvard…she had accepted the position…as the liason and life was doing what it was doing….I admired the direction and level of committment they both had…but the specifics of the scenario were already proving to be unattainable….they asked me what I thought of the plan….I asked what she had accomplished based on the plan up to this point of her life….she was missing the mark at every juncture….never able to complete a single project…master anything…and what did they expect…she was 9…..and a child…my suggestion was to make the plan hazy…they were angry at my suggestion….told me that the plan was the plan…and my idea would make her like every other kid….I said to them as they left…”She is like every other kid“…something they didn’t want to accept…they quit my class….and that was it….

deciding what we want to do is certainly not age specific…sure we only have a limited time here and I guess it’s better to be doing what we want rather than what we have too…but sometimes that discovery is….like walking through the desert….we stumble upon the most beautiful stone…it’s always been there…so have we…this just happened to be the day of introduction….and it’s really about what we do with it from this point…the choices become great…

The Protestant Work Ethic says a great deal more stuff about working…yet doesn’t really mention anything about liking the work we do…that to me is the most important part of working…is making it not work at all….but something enjoyable…beneficial…good for you and something that at the end of the day…you feel good about doing it and look forward to doing again real soon…here’s the PWE:

The set of values associated by Weber with the rise of modern capitalism and industrial society. The ethic is that we fulfil our duty to God by diligence, hard work, and restrained expenditure, with the resulting accumulation of goods acting as a reassuring sign (although not a cause, since the outcome is predestined) of eventual salvation.

that’s just a little too scary for me….

sure pre-planned lives are fine…there is nothing wrong with having it all mapped out….knowing where you’re going and when…but just starting out…in life…how do you know what you want…until you try a few things…..we naturally migrate to certain professions…and maybe that’s the place to start…if your migration leads you to the circus…try it…if it isn’t real…it will let you know….but what ever it is we do and at what ever age we discover what “IT” is……is just perfect timimg…and wouldn’t happen until…..we encounter that beautiful stone sitting there right in front of us……..

Enjoy this cloudy…beautiful Sunday…….
