“We cannot be sure of having something to live for unless we are willing to die for it” – Che Guevara

I read this article….http://www.artdaily.com/index.asp?int_new=36322&int_sec=2 which is touted as “setting the stage for the next art movement to debut in New York City“….doesn’t that sound a little contrived…and perhaps…a bit to developed like a business plan…or maybe like playing chess and the artists remain the pawns….only with different hands controlling them…here is a small excerpt from the article:

Representatives from the offices of the Department of Cultural Affairs, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and a range of other government offices supportive of the visual arts in New York City have committed to attend. NYC:SOTA expects up to 1,000 attendees. The core publics include artists, New Yorkers, decision makers, thought leaders, and visual arts supporters and consumers. Those who cannot attend are invited to let an artist attend by sponsoring a ticket.”

I’ve highlighted the part that troubles me the most….”Those who cannot attend are invited to let an artist attend by sponsoring a ticket.”…I was hoping there would be some television commercials with a few artists standing around some barren wasteland…distended bellies…hands holding paint brushes…a colony of flies gathering around their lips….and eyes….a man with a full head of gray hair and a thick Welch accent…asking you to give “so many like these can paint…and be part of the next art movement.”…

Art Movements have typically been developed by those seeking to create a demand for a supply that exists yet has no real place….and once the ball is rolling…smart entreprenurial thinkers….following the template that worked and say…”Hey if this worked with those paintings they called impressionism….let’s call these post impressionism and see what happens”….that mentality doesn’t die off like the artists who made the work…so there is some level of guaranteed monetary expectation from these “Movements”….

Movements of any kind are developed in the studios by those who are making the work….and are more often developed by people who have been involved in the field for most of their lives….in some way….to think a panel of “wealthy experts” is going to develop the movement…turn it over to marketing..who in-turn will hire young good-looking artists to be the poster children for the movement….present the movement… support the movement and then make the movement a successful movement is far to orchestrated and unrealistic….because a group of philanthropists likes particular artists…..does not mean their opinion makes the movement….

Art Movements are based on passionate…intellectual ….doing and being…with no regard to the “Movement” per say….you as an artist are either in it or you are not…and certainly there is some notoriety of being at the forefront of an art movement….the Abstract Expressionist knew they were gaining popularity….getting some established place in the art world….yet their goal was to produce work….and continue to produce work….

many artists think their work is unique…something not yet seen by the powers that be…and once they are realized…they will be an integral participant in some new art movement of sorts….if you are painting pizzas with wheels pulled by pink poodles with avocadoes as heads….sorry…already been done…new twist to abstraction….already done…minimalism with anything more minimal…already done…..the task is to keep painting…making the work and perhaps one day…a small…thing changes that causes all of the big stuff to shift….

and all the years of passion..devotion…dedication and work…makes the artist the changed arists…the one who omitted ego…provinciality….and developed individuality…this is the beginning of art movements….where like minded people converge…..maintain an intellectual approach to their work…and their discussions…create diologue that offers resistence…intereference….yet clarity  among the participants….and there are no public meetings or press releases about developing the new art movement….or giving tickets to artists so they can attend….

and if there are…..I can tell you…I don’t want to part of that particular art movement……..

  1. We’re all ‘stakeholders’ in the currently depressed art world. Leave it to New Yorkers to be so bold as to think they will create the next art movement. I wonder if they will do so in a politically correct manner. Sounds like they’re off to a good start. Stand back world!
