“Brushes” 2010

“I owe my success to having listened respectfully to the very best advice, and then going away and doing the exact opposite.” – G.K. Chesterton

I had a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine last night who was displaying his work at a local gallery…we talked about many things…but the subject of lineage came up…he asked me who my panting mentors were/are….who was it I studied under while in art school…..I told him and asked him the same question….we began discussing the importance of influence….in the life of an artist….a few of his pieces were very obviously influenced by Richard Diebenkorn….and Hans Hoffman…both of whom he was connected to by a few degrees of separation…I left the conversation feeling a sense of greater connection…

as artists it is really necessary to have some place to feel connected ….a group of like-minded artists…thinkers…believers…doers…or a lineage that offers a straight line connection…to those who influence us and help our work evolve….it’s like being part of the club…..

as far as what a lineage and mentors and constant education and studying art history and endless reading and learning about past and present artists and painting every opportunity and showing your work and taking critiques and realizing it’s all about the work…what all of that does……it merely says you are in the game…..and are beginning to let go….

I have 2 friends that have just let go….and letting go allows for nothing but new to enter……their ability to release gives them so much opportunity to create and develop new and exciting work…because the attachment is spider web thin….durable…yet not long-lasting……

I hope you enjoy your Saturday……and perhaps web breaks soon……
