312.May 17th….be very…very careful……you couldn’t break it if you tried…..

“Many Souls” 2008

“I’ve decided life is too fragile to finish a book I dislike just because it cost $16.95 and everyone loved it. Or eat a fried egg with a broken yolk (which I hate) when the dog would leap over the St. Louis Arch for it.” – Erma Bombeck

Fragile is defined as: “easily broken, shattered, or damaged; delicate; brittle; frail”….each of these words that defines fragile gives it a quality of untouchable…something I might even be afraid to be around….for fear of damaging it…or worse ruining it beyond repair….and we all see things…have things in our lives that are fragile….

I’ve grown orchids for many years…the myth that they are fragile…is because they appear delicate…and lack the look of being hardy…yet in reality orchids grow in the wild sometimes taking root in rocks….places where a foothold seems impossible….yet they thrive….produce a bloom like nothing else…something so unique and individual that a cluster of 20 blooms…though intitially identical…..are more dissimilar than they are alike……

maybe how we translate something gives it the quality of Fragile…or Strudy….a sit in front of a beautifully still pond…to me is a fragile experience….or watching a skilled Karate-Ka perform a well executed kata….becomes a fragile…series of movement…delicate…..with the venom of a cobra….perhaps…..a piece of art has a fragile expression….based on the nature of the artist….being in love has moments of fragility…..where we say we are vulnerable…..yet in reality we are afraid of nothing…..a spider’s web….fragile but not……and I guess it all depends on where you are in the web and what position you are in the web……that determines your take on fragility…..

I think understanding how fragile we are is important….as that allows us to accept certain aspects of who and what we are….my father used a saying that was directed towards me….”You need to be hard as nails , cold as ice”…….sure there are certainly times in life you do need to be like nails and ice….and it certainly is good to have that in your arsenal of who you are….but understanding some sense of duality…that for every nail….and sheet of ice there is a round smooth pliable piece….a warm water place with that lacks the form…..

the Tao says:

Understanding others is knowledge,

Understanding oneself is enlightenment;

Conquering others is power,

Conquering oneself is strength;

Contentment is wealth;

Forceful conduct is wilfulness,

Not loosing one’s rightful place is to endure,

To die but not be forgotten is longevity.

    Thanks for the wonderful sharing of yourself.
    I’m working on enlightenment. Sometimes it’s easier for me to beileve in the strengths of others than my own.
