Thoughts from the "Tinman"

“Entrance to Oz” 2010

“We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive.” –  Albert Einstein

to offer an idea…without the exchange of something for something…..sounds a bit one sided…what if you could learn something you wanted to really learn….and it cost you nothing but your time and the investment of self…..the person teaching you wanted nothing….how would you feel about that….have we not always learned if it is free…then it doesn’t have the same value as if we paid for it…why is that…does there always have to be an exchange…..to make a value appear worthwhile….

I think those type people are called volunteers…..and volunteers are valuable…yet they are also sort of….secondary to the big picture…as often..the big picture has something involved with it that gets while the volunteer gives…and the volunteer maybe gets more from a satisfaction position than anything else….a sense of helping while the entity itself profits or benefits in another way…there is a strange dynamic…about the expectation of free work…by those that want and by those that are willing to give….I’ve often heard that some businesses have these types of trade offs….”you can be involved in our business but in order to be involved you have to volunteer x amount of time”…..and I’m wondering if the reverse is true….since I’m involved in your business and I volunteer x amount of time….does that mean you will volunteer x amount of time …say mow the lawn once or twice a month…for the opportunity to be involved in my life….it does sound ludicrious…doesn’t it…but it happens…..

often times these volunteer positions have a title that gives them an air of importance other than a volunteer….perhaps an “Intern”….is a better word….this sounds as though the volunteer has a special skill…something that required a resume….a few references…an aptitude test and some familiarity with the position requiring the intern….be a few steps above a mere volunteer…..it always seems that equitable benefit is the precident…and in many cases that is probably a reasonable way of maintaining a relationship that lasts…..

Part of being a higher rank in most karate schools is the committment to teach the younger students….sort of an unwritten rule….that says…to train here you must pay me  x amount of dollars per month and teach x amount of classes per month….and within that tradition there is a level of obligation that is not questioned….and just done…..yet…like many voluntary position that have an unspoken committment to them…thay are easily abused…..and once abused…often never return to an equitable relationship….causing resentment and lack of desire…..to continue volunteering…..

to be part of anything whether it is a business…working as an intern or a volunteer…it is necessary to acknowledge the efforts of those involved that keep the machinery working….anybody that has achieved anything of significance….will know clearly that they were a small part of that success…it took a team of people doing what they do well…to keep the momentum and drive….to attain the position….and if the recipient is anything other than a complete narcissistic  sociopath…they will not only recognize that but bow to that effort…..

I’ve thought of volunteering…but these days I may be a bit to cynical….I’ve toyed with the idea and found that I do prefer an equitable exchange…yet I also know I want to give some of what I know away….and I’m working on how to present that so there is the an exchange as well as a freebee…..kind of like a coupon for 50% off if you know what  mean……seems everybody can benefit from that…..I’ll keep you posted…..
