366. July 18th….7 Steps of Highly Effective Creative, Lazy, Don’t Want to get a Real Job….Artists….and other pertinent….information…

“Jack Anticipated  His New Life” 2010

“I am accustomed to sleep and in my dreams to imagine the same things that lunatics imagine when awake.” Rene Descartes

success in art is a completely undefinable entity that sort of hovers above the artists…..like a pinata and once broken…by some blindfolded arbitrary swing of the bat…..showers the artist with some level of sweet success…..I receive a variety of news letters…telling me how I can be a more successful artist…if I follow their format…there is a myriad of information available on how to go from the studio to the Met…in 7 easy steps…people have capitalized on their ability to suggest they have the secret to share….and for only 19.95 they will share with you…there are gallery owners who offer seminars on how to get into galleries….who are really selling the method to getting into their gallery…everybody sells a way that works…

There are many authors that have tried to write art success books based on books that have done well in the corporate environment…my question has always been if your success is so good in the art world….how do you have time to write books….I mean any body can take the format of 7 Steps of Highly Effective People and apply it to just about anything….like…..7 Steps of Highly Effective Procrastination…or 7 Steps of Highly Effective Voodoo…just fill in the last word with anything you want it to be…write a book ……see what happens….

artists have always been described as somewhat of under achievers in the world outside of art…I mean if it weren’t for those other people…we’d be …heroin addicts….forget our addresses…..unable to put left shoe on correct foot…all of the stereotypical ideas that follow artist like a tail…and unfortunately many people and artists alike have bought into the myth….yes….artists view the world differently than people who are not artists… yes…creative people have a tendency to be more edge walkers…..yes….artists may live a different type of life….and to sum it up…so what…so does everybody else….artists have been described as “lazy”….but fundementally it doesn’t matter what you call yourself…if you’re  lazy…you are…there are lazy doctors….lawyers…engeineeers….teachers….astronauts….generals….etc..lazy is not associated with the profession any more than every artist has to be schizophrenic…..it is a person’s choice….lazy people…they know that…..

Artists are the most creative people….we can take a mixture of many things and turn it into something beautiful…something that evokes emotion…may bring smiles or people to tears….we are very capable people when it comes to creating…so why then do we think we are incapable of creating the business side of art…. that too is choice…I’ve heard many times artists say….. “I just don’t like talking to people”….and that’s where it stops….so that dead end…kills it all…no possibility of ressurection…..better hope a famous art dealer has an automobile accident in front of your studio….and needs to use your phone…sees your art work…and……………………………….

I know there are proven methods that work…regardless of what you are selling…which is exactly what art is…we are selling ourselves first…what our product does for the gallery/buyer….second….and finally our product….that’s it…..there is a format that need be met in order to approach the gallery…and met to their requirements…..don’t meet it…shouldn’t expect anything but rejection…meeting it…doesn’t necessarily assure acceptence….and maybe all of it for a few years is just learning patience…persistence…and over all practice…..and realizng it takes all of the elements to complete the equation….

The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence. Talent without these things vanishes and even modest talent with those characteristics grows.” – Milton Glaser

Producing art is only about the work…my thought…..when the work is right…ready…the rest makes more sense……

  1. Robert, I must know about these images you’re posting each day. Can you perhaps write a little about them? I’m enthralled.

  2. I like riding this ship with you, the creative one where you discuss the ebb and flow of arting. I like to see what you do with things, how you place them. It is good to learn from you. Thank you for all of these great posts, Robert. It is good to be here with you.
