412. September 16th…the army’s motto… “Be all you can be” …..should be… “Be what you are”……it’s a bit existential for the military…and there would be a whole lot more deep discussions than the army might like………

“Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent’s fate.” – Sun Tzu

Gotta love a good Thursday….this one is mine entirely…that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m doing nothing…..a full one ahead…I’m eager for it all to find its place on the playing field….we’ll see what happens…..

distractions have been an integral part of my life….without them…there would have been no waves…or sand dunes…or wind…or ripples on the water…everything would have been sheer…..motionless……. and I guess I would just sit there…wondering what to do with all of the nothing going on around me….until I could find something that was moving at the same pace I moved…..but until then I would just wait…..it’s not very different these days….except now…..I don’t wander so far…..and so deep into the woods…without the flashlight and extra batteries…..

I am safe in my world….and don’t really like it when my world has a buzzing fly….one I don’t know….that trys desperately searching for a way through the pane of glass…..to no avail….I don’t care how it got in…I care that it gets out…..

taking what we know…and doing anything other than nothing with it…is the greatest effort we can put forth….yet often…the guise…of activity comes with the nose and glasses….sort of thinking…..stacking papers….filing stuff away…saying “Buy…Sell”…..intermietantly throughout the day….for reasons…..that may seem apparent…with no soft cherry center in sight….may be like dating a latex blow up doll…you named Candy or Dirk…(dep[ending on persuasion)…..fooling other people….is one thing…fooling ourselves…..is the ultimate sin….no chance for heaven…just one day the chute opens and you’re burped right into the fires of…..hell…or have to be a manager of a 24 hour Wendy’s…..or worse a host at an all you can eat buffet…..

what we are is what we are….what we want to be is not necessarily a good choice…and often not getting that “want”…. is a great thing….I originally went to college to become a “Forest Ranger”…and I’m certain it was for the cool green shirts….the tear-proof pants…and of course the “Smokey the Bear” hat…..now in hindsight…I probably could have purchased the wardrobe…dressed the part….delved into deep discussions at parties about…..Cercis canadensis….Cornus florida…and leave us not forget my favorite….Liquidambar formosana……but somehow the genuine nature of the hoax is left at the starting gate…..and I would only have been a forest ranger by knowing….3 trees…..wearing the trappings…..and wanting to be something…that I lacked the intrinsic pulse…..

the word intrinsic….means: “of or relating to the essential nature of a thing“…something of which we all are….and have within us…..finding that is the qwest……developing it the journey…….living it is the ideal life…..yet trying to be what we can not…is translated best in one my father’s favorite sayings…..

“Don’t piss down my back and try to tell me it’s raining”

  2. Your vision of hell totally cracks me up. Yep. That’d pretty much be my version, too. Or working the gift shop at the Arizona~Sonora Desert Museum, selling american Indian jewelry to tourists and listening to MORE Carlos Nakai flute music.

Robert, I’ve never thought of ‘distraction’ the way you’ve put it here. Beautiful! Sand dunes are among my top favorite parts to living on Earth. And waves! and wind ripples. I can’t imagine not knowing them.

From now on I will be able to picture this, what you’ve written here, when I get on my ass for being distracted.

Thank you, Robert. Your sharings are gifts. 🙂

    • I forgot to add a living hell…one I did for a year at a massage clinic… the work was great..but .the endless “Ena” music was far too much…like Carlos Nakai…flute music…a little goes much further than a long way….
