455. December 12th…I like the Win…Win Days…..

“Whoever is winning at the moment will always seem to be invincible” – George Orwell

twice a year…the organization I teach Karate for has a tournament…and yesterday  was the…day…I don’t know that much about children…but what I do know is they are like big people only small..yet their process for what and how they think…act…talk…react and respond…is so greatly removed from that of an adult…that the only similarity to species is the obvious visual….don’t get me wrong..that difference is not anything that condemns a child…rather the step into being an adult begins the process of condemnation…

I think…children are not allowed to be children long enough..often they are expected to do things they can hardly pronounce….let alone process…do and complete…

the groups of kids I teach are very unique children…I respect them for being in the game for as long as they chose to be in the game…I mean after all…”Focused Attention” in..children may be as short as 8 seconds…while in teens and adults…”Sustained Attention” may last up to 20 minutes…so the prize may very well shift every 8-10 seconds…and in some cases I’ve seen it happen right before my eyes…but nevertheless….

yesterday was a monumental day for all of them….my students know the protocol…they clearly know what they can and can not get away with….with me….what is expected and what they are capable of….they are all very talented children…and were there yesterday because they wanted to be there…some have the skills in areas others do not…some students will be in a karate program for a few years…some might be in a program for a lifetime….

yesterday they shined….and they were brilliant…each of them did the best they could…showed off what they have learned over the last 15 weeks…walked away with trophies…medals…and more importantly some level of satisfaction that maybe made them a little stronger…more powerful…more certain…

the students that were unable to make the tournament…well they are just as brilliant…they are as dedicated…and focused as the rest….they all passed their testing last week…and each will be advancing to a new level of thrills spills and chills….as they well know…a new belt makes them more responsible…makes them more accountable to those in their circle…..as well as when they walk into my circle each Tuesday and Wednesday night…

I always advocate winning….but if you lose…lose graciously and well…know that your loss has the potential to make you stronger for the next time out….

so to all of you hummingbirds….congratulations on passing testing….and on your success at the tournament……
