497. February 22nd…Want to get famous?…it’s easier than you think….become a Martyr….

“Half Face with Guitar” 2011

The crow has flown away:
swaying in the evening sun,
a leafless tree.
Soseki Natsume

what starts out as a great idea….sure can spiral into a rather bland sort of pancake world quickly…and worse…settle into a place that virtually nothing happens…other than the day-to-day business of maintaining the day-to-day business…and for some time it is convincingly glamorous…or still remains “Great”…until one day someone says…”hey…wait a minute…these aren’t real diamonds…they’re plastic“…then the exodus begins….and the martyrs reveal themselves….

it’s a lot like eating celery…rumor has it takes more calories to eat…and digest the watery vegetable than there are calories in it…

martyrdom for any belief is right there along side prostitution for longevity…and the oldest profession…except I don’t think martyrs get paid and if they do….it can’t be well…yet we have taken the idea of being a martyr…from it’s original meaning which is “Witness“…to enduring horrific torture and death for a belief…

St.  Lawrence who was “grilled and toasted alive“…added a bit of humor to his martrydom…it is said …

that he did not mind the pain from the fire of his martyrdom, and indeed, he found the strength to tell his executioners “Turn me over. I am done on this side.”

it is not likely he was grilled alive, historically…”Subversives” were beheaded then burned…but on an even more humorous note…St. lawrence is often shown holding a gridiron…and is considered the patron saint for…Cooks….

martyrs have always held on to a belief…be it of religion…relationship…business… habit…children…work….and i’m wondering how much of what we each believe might not really be accurate…and what if you found out what you did believe was not accurate at all…these would be two questions to think about….

1. What belief would be hardest for you to let go of?…and if you could…let go

2. What would happen if you now had to redevelop a belief far from the original belief?…

what if all of this time we’ve  spent stuck to something that never had the possibility to be what we wanted it to be…and we still did it….or do it….

most businesses fail within the first year…and usually because of mismanagement… and not having enough money to keep the business and you running…and rather than admitting that the business idea was not doable…people tend to stick it out until some end appears…martyr themselves…family…and people who don’t even know they are being martyres…they find out later when they…are getting flipped over on the grill…

often a bad idea…may appear to be great…and it might be driven by greed…. prestige…power…a whole myriad of elements based in one’s ego….and my guess is the larger the ego…the greater the inability to let go of a bad idea….becomes…it might be a lifetime before we realize we have martyred ourselves for something that is just not workable….when we could have been working on workable solutions….

if you’ve not seen the movie…127 Hours…do….it certainly illustrates what martyrdom can look like….in a better way then getting pulled apart by horses…crucified…burned at the stake or drowned with an anchor around your neck…..

just think of the possibilities….

Martyrdom: The only way a man can become famous without ability.” – George Bernard Shaw

  1. Two things – I don’t understand prostitution for longevity. Okay now I get it. You mean martyrdom and prostitution have both been around for a long time.
For a moment I thought maybe it meant prostituting yourself for some prosthetic life extending attachments.

2nd – Shaw must be referring to positive fame. Now a days the easiest way to get famous is to become infamous for murder.
