596. March 13, 2012….You are only as “Fake” as you feel….or may appear to be…

“It’s better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody.” – Matt Damon

the Mens Rolex…36mm Platinum Day-Date President – Blue Myriad Diamond Dial…sells new for around $69,950.00…and if you’re in the market for an almost new Rolex Mens Platinum President Blue Dial…it’ll cost you about $42,000.00…just think….you could save over $25,000.00 by buying the Blue Dial…I found a Rolex knock-off for $249.00…but most of them sell for under $100.00…the average counterfeit Rolex watch is about $69.00….so for a few dollars…you can wear what appears to be at first impression…a Rolex…

It really isn’t what you are…it’s really more what you want to appear to be to everyone else…which will eventually become what you believe yourself to be to everyone else…which based on where you started is just as much a mirage as what you want  to appear as…to the outside world…sort of like a myth…clearly unreal…never a legend…

in Pierre Bordieu’s… “The Pure Gaze: Essays on Art”…he breaks down understanding art to deciphering a code…learning a particular dialogue that is essential to appropriate all that goes with the art…here’s what he writes:

“Since the work of art only exists as such to the extent that it is perceived, or, in other words, deciphered, it goes without saying that the satisfactions attached to this perception – whether it be a matter of purely aesthetic enjoyment or of more indirect gratification, such as the effect of distinction – are only accessible to those who are disposed to appropriate them because they attribute a value to them, it being understood that they can do this only if they have the means to appropriate them. Consequently, the need to appropriate goods which, like cultural goods, only exist as such for those who have received the means to appropriate them from their family environment and school, can appear only in those who can satisfy it, and it can be satisfied as soon as it appears.”

those who purchase a…. $69.950.00….36mm Platinum Day-Date President – Blue Myriad Diamond Dial Rolex…have been instructed to do so…taught by those who know the code…to decipher the code…knowing that particular watch…does something for them within the world they live…something that a Fake Rolex…could not do…nor ever do…

I’m not really clear as why something… “Real” has a greater value than something… “Not Real”…but historically…an original anything is usually much more sought after than a fake anything…and often the fake anythings are sold as the real anythings and sometimes called fraud….so Matt Damon’s statement I guess is true unless of course you’d like “Value” added to the equation….I mean based on Matt’s thinking…a Ponzi Scheme is really not a questionable investment…because it appears everybody’s making loads of dough…right?…Here is a list of  “Really Good Fake Somebodies” ….even our own…Doug Vaughn…right here in Albuquerque….is one of the exceptional class of  “Fake Somebody”…only scammed…$76,000,000.00….not bad Doug…enjoy your new digs….

Van Gogh “Irises”

  • The Original: $104.5 million
  • Michael’s: $19.95

1978 Le- Montrachet

  • Original $23,925.00
  • Franzia White Zin Box Wine $10.99

Which would you rather buy?

Which would you rather sell?

Which would you rather own?

no doubt buying these is difficult if not impossible…..there are things out there that could become these though….they have to be one thing and only one thing…..THE ORIGINAL…..the Real something…..not the Fake something… or all else fails….

when you can’t imagine spending $1000.00 on the original….remember…the original can always go up in price….the fake will never do anything but remain a fake…a fraud…bogus…artificial.. concocted…affected…phony…

sort like that 2 carat CZ on your finger or the Rolex Replica on your wrist…or maybe that Giclee print you had framed on your wall….or that $20.00 bag that kind of resembles a Louis Vuitton….or those fake kids you’ve raised…and the fake spouse….and sparky the fake wonder dog…oh and all of those fake orgasms….so much better than the real ones….right?

“It’s better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody”…..just plan on all of the rest being fake too”

“I had no idea that being your authentic self could make me as rich as I’ve become. If I had, I’d have done it a lot earlier.” Oprah Winfrey

  1. Hmmmm….fake-is it fake if it is called ‘a copy of’? Me thinks it’s fake only if you are truly passing it off as the original. From a print maker’s or a photographer’s perspective in regards to running editions of. I think disclosure is an important part of the equation too.
If only MY authenticity could garner me financial gain…or, would I want it to?

  2. Every photograph or print…reproduced is an original…always will be…it took something a “real something” to create it…talent…skill…accident…intention…but duplicating a Rolex watch to appear like a Rolex watch so one can have some image of something is far more dubious than a lithograph being reproduced…but as Bordieu eludes…there is a dialogue…a decipher necessary to get what art is…and that deciphering is a learned notion
