Star Gazing

“I’m not interested in preserving the status quo; I want to overthrow it.”

I used to camp on a picnic table at Bean Hollow Beach, long after they would lock the gates, check the bathrooms and say goodnight to whatever needed saying goodnight to….I’d walk around the heavy yellow pipe barricade, with my sleeping bag, a flashlight, a small styrofoam cooler and my journal…I always had plans…didn’t always initiate the plans but had them nevertheless…Often I’d start a small fire under the concrete picnic table that was my bed to warm it up…I’d lie there, drink some beers and watch the star filled sky…watch for anomalies and satellites…strange events, anything that wanted to come forward…it was an experience I often think of today and how it was, simple and easy….a pleasure to be a part of a few times each month….I owned the beach, and everything on it…it was mine for about 8 hours…sometimes I’d count the stars like the minutes…because I could…

“Because of indifference, one dies before one actually dies.” – Elie Wiesel

In the next day or so…some people are going to make a series of commitments that range from the benign to the extreme….hoping that by the sheer act of verbalizing their resolution ….the resolution now has a beautiful new set of pearly white wings…rather than the old cutout cardboard…water stained wings hanging in the garage from few years ago…that proved flight was fantasy…or at least extend flight was…yet the new wings…well of course they’re different…right?

Friedrich Nietzsche used resolution with Christianity much like Taoism defines the notion of what ever we are looking for we will find….Nietzsche said… ” The Christian resolution to find the world ugly and bad has made the world ugly and bad…sort of what ever you look for you’ll find…and I guess this takes me to here:
  • Australian Aborigines believe:
The great Father of All Spirits awakened the Sun Mother and told her to go down to earth and
wake the sleeping spirits, …”Give them forms”…when Sun Mother arrived on earth…every step she took  plants began to grow…she walked into the dark caves…her light awakened all the spirits and insects of all kinds flew from the caves…soon the insects were mingling with the plants..Sun Mother was happy…She ventured deeper into the caves…her great light melted all of the ice forming all of the rivers and streams…she then created the fish and small snakes, lizards and frogs. Then awakened the birds and animals…she told all of them to enjoy the wealth of the earth and live peacefully…Sun Mother returned to the sky and became the sun…everything watched Sun Mother disappear into the west…they stood frozen thinking she had left them…until they saw her the next day peek up on the other side of the earth….Sun Mother thought to herself that she must create new creatures…She gave birth to two children. The god was the Morning Star and the goddess was the moon. she sent them to Earth. They became our ancestors.
  • Iroquois believe:
Before the world was an island floating in the sky where the Sky People lived…no one died or was born or was ever sad…a Sky woman realized  she was going to give birth to twins, she told her husband…he was enraged and pulled up a tree from the center of the island…creating an enormous hole…the Sky woman curious peered down the hole and saw the earth below covered with water…her husband pushed her through the hole…surely going to fall into the water filled with water animals…seconds before hitting the water….two birds caught her on their backs and brought her to the other animals…there was only water…and try as they may the birds could not get enough mud to make land from beneath the ocean…then little toad tried…when he returned his mouth was filled with mud and they began covering the back of Big Turtle…the mud grew until it was the size of North America…Sky Woman stepped onto the land, she sprinkled dust into the air and created stars. Then she created the moon and sun….Sky Woman give birth to twins sons Sapling and Flint….Sapling was gentle and kind…Flint was hard and cold…they grew and filled the world with their creations…Sapling created what is good. He made animals that are useful to humans. He made rivers that went two ways and into these he put fish without bones. He made plants that people could eat easily. Flint destroyed much of Sapling’s work and created all that is bad. He made the rivers flow only in one direction. He put bones in fish and thorns on berry bushes. He created winter, but Sapling gave it life so that it could move to give way to Spring….Sapling and Flint decided to fight and Flint was beaten…but since he was a god…he could not die…Flint was forced to live on Big Turtle’s back. A volcano is his anger….

What ever we choose to resolve…we must do it with a great story…something that this time next year…when we’re wearing Beatle Boots…maybe driving a convertible….eating ice cream right out of the container…and saying… “Bitchin” instead of “Great”…oh and eating more with our hands than with utensils…we can look back and say it was ….bitchin…..

Be well…..

469. January 8th…There’s really something to the symbolic nature of good signs

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”  ~Victor Frankl

I heard birds for the first time this morning…chattering about the feeders by the Pyracantha bush…near my window…perhaps they are announcing a sign…a change is on its way…faster than expected…

seems signs are everywhere and they only matter if…they do…I am a believer in signs…jinxs…and how some small action may very well change the entire course of my life…maybe something as simple as…putting on my right shoe first….(which by the way…never happens and never will)…but if it did…everything would change…and I know that with certainty…that I guess is habit…perhaps driven by an OCD component…but nevertheless….a reality in my world…one I pay close attention too…

I’m sure we all have signs…we pay attention to…they reveal themselves…give us a little insight…and maybe just point a direction…and we just might go that direction or not…I think signs are based somewhere in intuition…we have the information…yet have not formulated the situation…so anything is really possible…but our intuition much like an itch we cannot reach…nags until relief arrives…and once satisfied…we move on with a little bit more information about what may be…

I visited my father’s grave some years ago…when I arrived….the grave was covered with black crows…my first response was…”Oh no Alfred Hitchcock“…the crows were moving around rapidly…Cawing..wings flapping…the scene was surreal to say the least…when I stopped the car…I immmediately thought this was a bad place to die from fright…and how would the phone call sound to my family that the grounds keeper had found my lifeless body laying on my father’s grave…and crows were using it as a roost…you can see how quickly the surreal nature became solidified as truly surreal…I went to the grave…all the crows flew off…I didn’t grip my chest…fall dead on the grave….and all was fine…but…there was a sign…and that was my father had something to do with crows…and crows had something to do with my father…now when I see a crow…I always say…”Hey Pop…how’s everything“…and it works…I’ve a friend…when she finds a penny…this is a message…from her mother…one she needs to listen too…and she does…

we have signs presented to us…as well as signs we present…to others and the world…both while we are living and when we die…I think when we die..we cease in one way and very much begin in a different way…a way that may  live on via sign…many Japanese poets..and Zen monks…wrote Haiku moments before they died…there was left a visual of what their last few thoughts were…and in some way those thoughts may also have been the way they return to those who knew them well…our death signs are important and remind people of us…and relationship

our life signs…are what we truly know…and the signs we display…may only be seen by those who can see our signs…or are looking for our signs…and for what ever reason a sign is seen…there is a connection that makes that relationship maybe not so mysterious…more of a knowing type of connection…that with care and time may very well produce the life altering results…I know this to be true…

signs are truly miraculous…they are there when we need them…they bolster our faith in things…help us to believe in what may sometime be questionable…and offer so much more than imagery or sound or a feeling…it is a type of proof…a way of paying attention…one that becomes a series of events…a different way of understanding…

I’d be very interested in what signs you experience…does someone who has died reveal themselves to you in a certain way…does a particular sound become something other than a sound..or a fragrance…speaks…loudly…please let me know…

“It is impossible for us to break the law. We can only break ourselves against the law.” – Cecil B. DeMille

Over Stimulation…a state in which the speed of the roller coaster is the least of my worries…..

I love these mornings that begin with a myriad of things to do sort of stacked up like the 8 am Bay bridge toll booth….a giant pez sort of mentality…and I am going to be the toll booth guy or the guy in line waiting…I know who I’d prefer to be…..but once past the booth…I’m moving…otherwise…it’s the same old thing….pretty much all day…the envy is extremely short-lived…..

my dryer is making a rather interesting bird sound….remininscent of a slightly altered version of the song of the “Fluvicola pica“…one of my all time favorites…..

but really….what matters today….is seeing the day….fill itself like a water balloon under the faucet…..the risk of knowing it may break before filled or it might not be filled enough to complete the task it was designed for….and bounce rather than burst…..but either way….it is a water balloon…..and that speaks volumes of the intent….

….the dictionary defines intention as: “an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.”…so undeniably intention is a motivating factor…even if we are unaware of the desire….it ensures really nothing at all though…we may have an intention….but doing it…requires an entirely usable bag of tricks to pull it off….tools we must know how to use well and often…..and I’m certain…intention  that makes our “A” list….we have learned to use those tools blindfolded sound asleep…..and can juggle five at a time with one hand…..with no fear of dropping them…..

intention from a philosophical sense requires 2 elements to be legitimized….an action and a movement…..in art there is intention that often is mixed with an intuitive element that begins the course of the work…. though both of those elements may never be visible….and only a sheer covering embedded in the work somewhere…the intention may not be as important as the end result…..just as the intention may become less important than the action or the movment….and what the intention did was spark the momentum…that turned the wheel that moved the vehicle where it needed to go…so another intention could then be announced…..and like a three-toed tree sloth…the process may be painfully slow and arduous…but neverheless…a destination reached…not necessarily the desired destination….but a process derived from the original intention….that seemed the best most suitable one…..

intention may be…a rather nebulous…match to strike…as it takes more for the intention to actually cause results….it is more of an idea…..like a blind date…you never know what’s going to happen until it does…but having intention with expectation….it ….sort of poisons the intent…..rather than letting it run its course…..and evolve as it will in relation to how you evolve….as the intender…..

I think intention is very much like the movie “Ground Hog Day” with Bill Murray…..it can be painfully the same…..surprisingly different….or full of things that are beneficial….long lasting…and truly to our advantage……

just as long as it doesn’t have anything to do with Sonny and Cher……

“I cannot persuade myself that a beneficent and omnipotent God would have designedly created parasitic wasps with the express intention of their feeding within the living bodies of Caterpillars.” – Charles Darwin
