“Do well and you will have no need for ancestors.” – Voltaire

Transgress: “to go beyond limits set or prescribed, or go over a limit or boundary”…

many years ago I tried showing AKC English Bull Terriers…you remember…”Spuds McKenzie”…well the game of dogs was a game I was not well suited for…and whether it’s dogs…paper airplane making…egg tossing…sky diving…podiatry…the Highland games…invading small countries…porn movies…or really anything that involves more than one person with a little more than some interest…a set of protocols…rules…highlights and of course atrocities begins to emerge…

there is always a “Holy Grail”…something that elevates the holder to new heights…and puts a nice glow around them when they are standing on stage…announcing their announcements…pointing to…“those people”…who ”Helped make this possible” and those within the “Inner Circle”….yet who are not called….“those within the inner circle”…for obvious reason…it sort of reminds me of high school football…something I played briefly…and realized quickly my 13 year old…5 foot 2…105 pound body was also not suited for…

there are always those who win…and those who don’t…those who get close and get closer every time they try…and those that never will get any further than where they are…no matter what they do…as if perhaps the curse put on great…great…great…great grandfather Otto back in the old country …holds true…and the incantation applied to everyone with a drop of Otto’s blood in their veins…who knows…

I teach karate to kids…and within that very complex dynamic is always the conversation of…winning and losing…both of which have been defined as huge events…yet winning at a tournament…doesn’t mean anything other than…winning at a tournament…and losing at the same tournament means exactly the same…yet the second place mentality…which is losing…relinquishes the alpha status and dumps it right into the beta position…or if it’s 4th place…maybe even the omega position…and maybe the pattern for kids is the more you win the more of a winner you will be…I know that not to be true…winning consistently says you are either prepared…bigger and more aggressive…”game”…mom and dad want you to win more…there might be a legacy that needs to be upheld…or the kids pattern is…win = something with a positive result…don’t get me wrong…I advocate winning…yet I think winning for a child…all of the time makes them arrogant…deserving and entitled…

There is nothing like a great lose to allow us to collect ourselves…take stock in what we are doing and what it is really all about…if the source for the action is exclusively winning…perhaps the reason for doing is unimportant…lost in an end result…while the process becomes a blur…

The word “Transgress” is usually used in context along with …rules…codes and formats that are designed to keep the herd as a herd rather than running crazy on the hills…the bondries are often seen as laws that once one transgressed to a point…they pass beyond these…they now are at a juncture that is less than desirable…and maybe some name calling ensues….

Transgression also pulls people from one place…places them somewhere else… no longer in the path of freeway traffic…but in safety…security…a soft place…for them to see where they have been…move either to newer worse places or newer better ones…or a chance to return to the place before…most rehab counselors were once in rehab…that’s not a coincidence….it is always easier to believe someone who has been where you are standing at this moment…knows the same story…same characters same lies and truths…almost the same everything….than it is to believe someone who by saying they understand….thinks that understanding is = to experiencing….

good losses prepares us for good wins…failures do the same…sort of like chasing someone around a table…they can always end up opposite of you…and do  especially if you both run at the same speed…and think alike…but to fail/lose has a bitter taste to most…theme song could be Whipping Post by The Allman Brothers…color surely is black…atmosphere…slightly cloudy…perhaps fog…and damp….

but it doesn’t have to be this way…a win smells just like a loss…maybe a bigger trophy or a shinier medal…there may be more money in the envelop…but pinnicle…is as high as it gets cowboy…and so you’ve climbed Everest 4 times… big deal…it’s the first one that counts…don’t you think…the other 3 weren’t wins…they were repeats…

I guess I like the stories of the struggle rather than the win…the losses interest me far more than the garlands…and the parades…oh I like to win…but I’m fine when I don’t…and if I don’t and I really want to…I should have set that place setting…before anything else happened…

I shared with my students a quote I liked…” being first and right..is not always winning”….. though…losing can also be winning…everytime…it just depends on what the loss brought to the table compared to what the idea of winning took from the player….

Art and my thoughts about being an artist

“No More ‘Thank you Come Again’.” 2010

“Ever more people today have the means to live, but no meaning to live for.” – Viktor E. Frankl

I am setting out in some wonderful new directions lately…adventures I have been interested in….and finally we have opted to meet and make it all work….or at least see how it works…..

as a painter….there is a trap of definability of work….something that has a presence that oozes the artists style….that after a few views of a few paintings…everything is pretty much going to look similar or have a signature that is clearly that of the artist….from the side of sales and representation…that is perfect…yet from the position of the painter….the work becomes a continual exploration of the same work with…little variations that are small vacations but it’s…..always the same hotel….

by definition repeating similar processes will give similar results…..and even changing that process….will often give a personal “Chop” that no mater what…it is the handwriting of the artist…something that may venture into figurative and landscape paintings as well as explorations into abstraction and non-objective work….from the same artist…..and there might not be a thing that can be done to change that…..or if changing that is even necessary….

I feel like everyone…..artists find what works and tend to stay where the things that work well….do…perfect their abilities over a life time…come up with a flawless example of themselves…represented by a few hundred/thousand paintings…drawings…sketch books…and the like….things that show them over a period of time in every way they have been……in every situation they have experienced….one of my instructors feels if you are a painter…you paint…..nothing else…I don’t agree with that….and feel that if the exploration sends me into carving Oreo cookies into giant 300 foot sculpture as part of some process of discovery….then that’s fine…and a necessary part of the way it all gets to where it gets….

as far as painting….I feel for me….the ability to have slept with a particular style of painting until I know it so well it is difficult to separate me from the work is my ultimate desire…yet along that route…i want to experiment with other ways of thinking….producing work that takes me seriously out of the box…that is comfortable…carpeted…and full of everything I know….place me in the desolate….. where the wind blows hard and it’s very dry…..and I am forced to respond and respond quickly…..learn a new way to…breath differntly….see through my eyes in an alternative way….paint what I know nothing about…in essence….start…..

as an artist…I am constantly looking at works I’ve never seen before…..that is my obligation to me…it takes me out of my box….on….small field trips…gives me the opportunity to see what I’m NOT doing…..and what I would like to try….or not try….it makes me question how things are done….how processes are developed and refined….

one of the greatest things about this is….all of the new tools…..you know…..that stuff you just have to have….and it’s all the Holy Grail……

“The buttocks are the most aesthetically pleasing part of the body because they are non-functional.  Although they conceal an essential orifice, these pointless globes are as near as the human form can ever come to abstract art. ” ~Kenneth Tynan
