reflection

“Reflection” 2009

“Everyone and everything that shows up in our life is a reflection of something that is happening inside of us.” Alan Cohen

I am learning to take the time….each day…for a few moments of reflection…my choices are pretty easy…I can look for the negative or the positive…as I am both of those……but I am accentuating what makes me the best not only for myself…but others in my life…as those in my life are a reflection of me…as I am of them….

a reflecting pond has many different layers….each has something in it that is unique…offers a message of sorts….by contemplation and journey…I guess reflection can be as dimensional as the person being reflected….showing back depth…or a thin superficial layer….because one has depth does not say anything other than that…depth needs to be defined…cultivated…expressed before there is any credibility to the intentions expressed….the value of the reflection is not necessarily the immediate image….often magnification….peripheral images….what’s far beneath the initial image….all of those…become as important as the reflection itself…..each is a story…a path…place in the life of the reflection….

This Halloween I’m hoping the party I go to have a large punch bowl….I can use as a reflecting pond…depending on my costume…I could frighten myself…initially and then wonder about the dry ice smoke and ice cubes in the reflection….how they are a part of my immediate life….maybe there will be some floating orange and black spiders…or candy corns….and they will automatically throw a puzzling aspect into the reflection…spiders and candy corn…what could that possibly mean?????….and how do they work into my life….and if indeed we are a reflection of the people in our lives……Halloween….may not be the best time to discover…this….another not so great place would be a public nude beach….the reflections there just may be far too much to deal with…..so I’ll nix that destination as a place for reflective contemplation….oh and maybe a large city public hospital emergency room is not a good place for reflection and deep thought….

so I guess what I’m leading up to is…by selecting who you want to reflect may be the place to start…that means we have to decide what kind of person we want to be…. I’m not saying there is anything wrong with people in an emergency room…a Halloween party or a nude beach….I am saying consciously becoming the person we want to be then makes us the mirror for those who chose us as friends and we choose as friends…rather than no choices and just some arbitrary selection….so today you’re Zsa Zsa Gabor’s reflection…and tomorrow…the reflection of the crack addict in the vacant house at the end of the street….we have choices….and it is all about choice…

I did “Mirror” drills with my older/advanced students last night….they followed each move I did….speed…direction…striking points…everything…it was wonderful to see them slow down…become very confident…with each movement….many of which they had never done and were a rather complex series of movements….yet through mirror imitation they preformed incredibly well….as if they had done this a few thousand times…..

so next time you look into the cereal bowl…see something that might appear alarming….before you think…”Oh no, what does that reflection mean about me?”…realize it could be a crunch berry…just hidden under a little milk……no big deal…..

THE ORIGINAL IMAGE (the Butt Hole Surfer’s Dancers have nothing on these…..)

THE REFLECTION…….(not always the greatest but ……….) Kind of looks like George W. 3 rows back at .33 of the song.

  1. LOVE the song.

I agree with you about reflections. You have to make a conscious decision to look at the positve or the negative. Same with friends… who are; for the most part; reflections of who we are.

… and I think it would be cool to see the reflections in a party punch bowl — may just have to try that 🙂
